Project targets
Children with a disability and / or trauma often lead an extremely isolated life. Knowledge about disability and / or trauma and special services for those people, especially in rural areas, are almost inexistent. The projects that do exist often lack professional skills on how to cope with these children. As a result, children (and adults) with disabilities are often considered inferior beings.
In Komera, the method of Total Communication has for many years proved to be very helpful for children with disabilities. They:
teach them how to communicate despite their disabilities;
teach them to take care (as much as possible) for themselves;
get more self-confidence and become more prepared for their future life as (partly) independent and respected people.
The programs in Komera also aim to raise awareness of the families and other people in the neighbourhood for the specific needs of these children and no longer see them as inferior persons.
